Meet Ginger, a young Sarasota Bay dolphin, who stranded on a beach on Siesta Key in December 2008. Was she sick? Was she injured? Whatever the reason, by the time the animal ambulance arrived, the veterinary staff had determined that Ginger needed to go to the Dolphin and Whale Hospital at Mote Marine Laboratory. At the hospital, Ginger gets blood tests, a hearing test and swabs of her blowhole.What makes Ginger unique, as a patient, is her refusal to eat dead fish. She is a picky eater and drives the staff crazy with her food preferences. No Dead Fish for Ginger provides a unique look at care and rehabilitation in a dolphin hospital, a view of Ginger’s habitat, her friends and family, and the threats she faces as a young marine mammal.
