Korean Peninsula has been home to the Korean people since the earliest settlers came south from the Mongolian plains about years ago Although much smaller than its neighbors China and Japan this land has been home to one of the worlds greatest and most unique societies THE KOREAN PENINSULA South Korea is part of a landmass in East Asia called the Korean Peninsula Its been said that the peninsula resembles a rabbit with its head and ears bordering China and the rest of its body surrounded by ocean According to legend Korea was founded by an ancient leader named Dangun According to the story Danguns mother was a bear and he lived for more than years before becoming a mountain god The founding of Korea is celebrated every October as National Foundation Day One of the most traditional symbols of Korea is the mighty Amur or Siberian tiger Unfortunately today its only a symbol These tigers have been extinct in Korea for many years Over the centuries the people of the peninsula have had many names for their land An early name was Joseon which means Land of the Morning Calm Sounds like a nice place but Koreas history hasnt always been calm THE KOREAN PENINSULA The people of Korea have also been referred to by many names by their neighbors One of these the People Who Wear White refers to the traditional white robe called a hanbok that Koreans wore in the early kingdoms Bamboo plants are a symbol of loyalty and long life Long ago Koreans would plant bamboo trees to show their loyalty to the king THE KOREAN PENINSULA At the base of Jeju island is YongduamDragon Head Rock According to legend the rock is the remains of a giant dragon that angered a volcano spirit and was turned to stone Only the head is visible but when the tide goes out his tail suddenly appears The island of Jeju is also known for the famous diving women of Jeju These female fishers dive to the seabed for shellfish without any breathing tank They can stay underwater for more than two minutes holding their breath Conservation of natural beauty has a long tradition in Korea As far back as CE monks would guard the areas around their monasteries to protect the beauty of the environment The small island of Jeju off Koreas southern coast is home to many wild ponies They are the descendants of ponies brought there by Mongolian invaders in the 14th century Jeju is just one of Koreas over islands If you decided to visit them all and spend a day on each it would take more than ten years 22C H A P T E R KOREAN HISTORY T oday South Korea constitutes the southern section of the peninsula but starting about CE the lands of the Korean people were united as one land called the Silla kingdom Over the centuries other dynasties would take control but the Korean national identity remained strong KOREAN HISTORY An important figure from early Korean history was Queen Seondeok who became the first woman to lead a united Korea Shes still remembered as a great leader and a recent TV show based on her life was a huge hit on Korean television One of Queen Seondeoks great achievements was the creation of the Cheomseongdae which is now the oldest astronomical observatory in the world It was built out of bricksone for each day of the year Many great temples were built during the Silla period which featured huge bronze bells The largest of these is the Emille Bell in Gyeongju Its said that the bells ring can be heard miles away KOREAN HISTORY After the Koryo era came the Joseon dynasty in One of the great leaders from this period was King Sejong the Great who ruled in the 15th century His rule was marked by great advancements in technology and culture For many centuries the Korean language was only spokennot written Chinese invaders forced the Koreans to use Chinese characters for writing but finally in the 15th century King Sejong ordered the creation of Hangeulthe first and only Korean alphabet The Silla dynasty was followed by the Koguryo dynasty later renamed Koryo This is where the name Korea comes from A major technological advance from this period was printing The Tripitaka Koreana is an ancient religious document printed on wood blocks in the 13th century Koreans also developed a system called jikji in which different words can be printed using individual metal letterforms This is the earliest known example of moveable typeabout years before Gutenbergs printing press

famous worldwide for the tropical beauty of its beaches But Mexicos rich biodiversity offers more than just sun sand and surf High desert in the north fertile plateaus in the central valleys as well as rainforest mountains canyons and even a few volcanoes combine to create habitats for a wide variety of plant and animal life making Mexico truly a land of natural wonders NATURAL WONDERS Mexico is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world It is home to species of plants kinds of reptiles over one thousand species of birds and about species of mammals including of course the jaguar One of the most amazing species of reptile in Mexico is the collared lizard Named for the two black stripes around its neck this quick little lizard uses its tail for balance and can run on two legs like an Olympic sprinter The huge asteroid that is believed to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs million years ago struck the Earth in Mexicospecifically near the current town of Chicxulub on Mexicos Yucatn peninsula NATURAL WONDERS Butterflies and tourists arent the only ones that like to spend the winter in Mexico Each December thousands of gray whales swim from Alaska to give birth in the warm water off the coast of Mexico One of the most impressive creatures native to Mexico is the quetzal bird Its long green tail feathers were used to decorate the headdresses of ancient Aztec rulers and in ancient times killing a quetzal was punishable by death When Spanish explorers arrived in Mexico in the 16th century they learned of a native insect called cochineal that could be used to make bright red paints and dyes Because Europeans loved red for royal garments this little bug became one of the most valuable exports from the New World The Mesoamerican Reef off the coast of Yucatn is the worlds secondlargest coral reef and is home to hundreds of species of sea life including fish turtles and sharks Every year in November millions of monarch butterflies make the mile journey from the United States and Canada south to central Mexico The butterflies gather in the Mexican state of Michoacn where the Mexican government has created a national refuge for them 22C H A P T E R ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS The oldest known civilization to have lived in Mexico ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS T hroughout history Mexicos rich natural landscape has given rise to many great civilizations At different periods in history indigenous cultures such as the Olmec Maya Toltec and Aztec ruled parts of Mexico As archaeologists continue to unearth remnants of these historic civilizations were learning more and more about how truly amazing they were is the Olmec Very little is known about this ancient culture but they left behind mysterious stone sculptures of giant headssome as large as feet tall and weighing tons Ancient Maya farmers were masters of an agricultural system called irrigation in which water is diverted to dry areas to water crops One of the most important crops grown by Maya and Aztec farmers was the cacao bean better known to us as chocolate from the Aztec word xocolatl Cacao beans were dried ground up and mixed with honey and hot waterthe worlds first hot chocolate Chocolate wasnt just for drinking It was such a desirable crop that the ancient Aztecs also used cacao beans as currency or money beans could buy you a turkey and to buy a jade necklace Hot chocolate might sound pretty good but you might be less interested in other parts of the ancient Mexican diet Maya and Aztecs enjoyed crunchy grasshoppers and caterpillars called maguey worms ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS The Maya and the Aztecs both were experts at building pyramids The famous temple of Kukulkan in the Maya city of Chichen Itza has exactly steps to the topone for each day of the year The largest pyramid in Mexico is the Temple of Cholula although until fairly recently nobody even knew it was there It had been so overgrown with plants and vegetation people assumed it was just a big hill until archaeologists began excavating it in the 1930s The Aztecs believed in many frightening gods The war god Huitzilopochtli was armed with a fire serpent and his evil sister Coyolxauhqui goddess of the moon according to legend murdered her own mother Ancient Maya were very knowledgeable about the movements of the stars and planets They observed the planet Venus closely and when they saw it in the sky it was a sign to go to war They called this a star war Rubber trees grow throughout Mexico and the Maya learned how to tap the sap from these trees and use it to make waterproof cloth glue and even rubber balls Another type of sap from a tree called the sapodilla was called chicle and turned rubbery when chewed Thats rightthe Maya invented chewing gum In fact chicle from the Yucatn was used to make gum up until the 1940s ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS The primary grain product in ancient Mexico was corn or maize The Aztecs and Maya used this to make everything from tortillas to popcorn Both the Maya and the Aztecs played a ball game called tlachtli Teams of two or three players wearing headdresses and large belts would try to hit a rubber ball through a stone ring Much like Roman gladiators the losers were usually put to death

R HISTORY L ocated smack dab in the middle of the continent France is Europes largest country and for centuries has been at the crossroads of history Surrounded by seas on sides and protected by mountains Frances rich farmland mild climate and natural borders has made it a natural home for great civilizations throughout its history From its prehistoric beginnings through monarchy revolution empire and democracy the history of France is a sweeping saga and sometimes a bumpy ride Members of the European Union HISTORY The earliest known inhabitants of what we now call France were a tribe of early humans called Celts or Les Gaulois in French They called their land Gaul which is derived from a Celtic word for hero The Celts also named the French capital Paris The city was built around a small island in the Seine river and the earliest inhabitants were boaters and fishermen The Celtic word for boat is par so the people were called the parisii boat people Around BCE the land of Gaul was conquered by the Romans This invasion and occupation was a major victory for an upand coming Roman general who was headed for bigger thingsJulius Caesar HISTORY A few hundred years later in about another famous French king named Charlemagne would get his revenge on Julius Caesar Under Charlemagne the new Frankish empire conquered Rome and all of Italy Take that Caesar In this period there were several French Kings with unusual titles including Pepin the Short Charles the Bald Charles the Fat and Charles the Simple The name Gaul didnt really stick but after the Romans left a new tribe of Germanic people arrived from the east That tribes namethe Franksturned out to be a little more permanent The Kingdom of the Franks eventually became known as France Before the Romans arrived the Greeks settled and built a city in southern France called Massilia Its now known as Marseilles Frances second largest city and one of its oldest The first Frankish King Clovis was crowned around and is remembered as the first king of France A more modern French translation of his name Louis became the name for more French kings HISTORY Joan of Arcs victory was so inspiring to the French that the English feared her symbolic power and captured her and burnt her at the stake Joan of Arc is remembered as a great hero in France Her victories and inspiration led to the final defeat of the English in This event is remembered by historians as the birth of the modern nation of France In William the Conqueror from Normandy in northern France invaded England and became king For the next years northern France including Paris was officially part of England The Bayeaux Tapestry a 230footlong medieval artwork tells the story of the Norman invasion of England with over scenes of battle sewn into linen Its one of the greatest pieces of medieval art and is nearly years old In a seventeenyearold girl named Joan of Arc convinced the French King Charles VII to let her lead an army against the English She commanded a force of men to defeat the English at the city of Orlans 22C H A P T E R REVOLUTION AND EMPIRE T he glory of the French monarchy reached its peak in the 17th century with the reign of King Louis XIV Known as the Sun King Louis built grand tributes to his wealth and power including the huge palace of Versailles But widespread poverty and anger toward the King soon boiled over and in the French Revolution began changing the history of France and the world forever REVOLUTION AND EMPIRE The French Revolution marked the end of the monarchy in Franceat least for a while King Louis XVI ruled was forced from power and eventually beheaded in but his younger brother Louis XVIII returned to the throne years later French queen wife of Louis XVI Marie Antoinette famously remarked let them eat cake when asked about the starving peasants of France But she didnt mean birthday cakeshe was referring to the crumbs left behind in a bread pan after the wealthy had eaten all they wanted REVOLUTION AND EMPIRE The Revolution changed everything in France including the calendar The French Republican Calendar was adopted in and included a 10day week called a dcad and all new months with names like Nivse snowy Pluvise rainy and Floral flowery Napoleon changed the calendar back on January to the preRevolutionary calendar we know today The Revolution began with the idea of liberty equality and brotherhood but soon became a bloody Reign of Terror During this period French people were arrested and beheaded by the dreaded guillotine Louis was a very popular name for French kings There were of them although King Louis XIX one of the last French monarchs stepped down after only minutes on the throne making him the shortestreigning monarch in history One of the most important holidays in France is Bastille Day July 14th It marks the beginning of the French Revolution when angry Parisians stormed the Bastille a large prison for criminals and political enemies of the King
