Author 11C H A P T E R HISTORY T he British Isles were formed years ago when melting glaciers created the English Channel separating the islands from the European continent Over the centuries many tribal groups arrived on the island and formed the foundation of British culture From these prehistoric beginnings Britain would build an empire that spanned the globe Today the United Kingdom is a thriving diverse country with a bustling economy and a proud cultural tradition that goes back centuries The countrys official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britian and Northern Ireland HISTORY What is Great Britain anyway Great Britain is actually the name of the island that contains England Scotland and Wales The nation called the United Kingdom includes Great Britian plus Northern Ireland Got all that Most of the people we think of as British actually came from somewhere else First the Celts came from central Europe then the Romans from Italy Angles and Saxons from northern Germany Vikings from Denmark and finally the Normans from France Today millions of immigrants from around the world call Britain home Because of the size and shape of the island no place in Britain is more than miles from the ocean No wonder they like fish and chips so much One of the enduring mysteries of British history is Stonehengethe ancient rock formation believed to have been built by Celtic settlers No one knows how this structure was built but it couldnt have been easy The largest stones weigh tons Stonehenge was built about BCE making it nearly years oldolder than the great pyramid of Giza in Egypt Britain was part of the Roman Empire for about years The Romans built roads and water systems throughout the island The islands original name comes from the Romans term for the territory Britannia HISTORY The British natives didnt accept Roman rule easily A legendary Celtic Queen named Boudicca led an army in revolt and it took Roman soldiers to stop her After years or so the Romans grew tired of fighting the locals so they built a wall in Scotland called Hadrians Wall to keep the troublesome rebels out Early AngloSaxons worshiped Norse gods and many of our days of the week are named for them Tiws Day Tuesday Wodens Day Wednesday Friyas Day Friday and Thursday which was named for one god youve probably heard ofThors Day William the Conqueror became the first Norman king of England when his army invaded in He soon built the famous Tower of London not to protect him from foreign invaders but from his own people who werent happy with Norman rule A Welsh prince named Madoc who sailed west seeking new lands claimed to have found the American continent in three hundred years before Columbus HISTORY King Richard I the LionHearted was so focused on fighting faraway Crusades that he only spent six months of his entire life in Britain and never bothered to learn English he was born in France Thats right a French person became King of England Queen Elizabeth I who reigned in the 16th century 1500s was so popular that ladies at court tried to copy her appearance even blacking their teeth with soot to match Elizabeths decaying teeth The nation of Great Britain was officially created in when the Kingdoms of England and Scotland were united and formed a single parliament British history is filled with tales of military drama and adventure but the British can also lay claim to historys shortest war The AngloZanzibar War of which lasted only minutes HISTORY Britains Lady with the LampFlorence Nightingalewas an English nurse who traveled to Ukraine to care for wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War 1850s She earned her nickname from her nighttime rounds through the sick wards British women were granted the right to vote in eight years after American women One of the most famous criminals in history is Jack the Ripper a murderer who terrorized London in Hes referred to as Jack but nobody knows the killers name The grisly crimes were never solved 22C H A P T E R THE MONARCHY T here are still many active monarchies in the world but none has captured the worlds imagination quite like the British crown From ancient tales of Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table to the drama surrounding Harry and Meghan we cant seem to get enough of British royalty Some of these surprising facts may help explain our fascination THE MONARCHY Traditionally the British King or Queen had considerable power But there were rules For example to this day the Monarch cant set foot in the House of Commons in British Parliament Its not surprising The last king who did it was Charles I in the 17th century and he wound up getting his head cut off Speaking of beheading King Henry VIII married six times and beheaded two of his wives all to try to have a male heir But it was all for nothing Henry died without a son to take over the throne the daughter from his second wife became Queen Elizabeth I The lateQueen Elizabeth II became Britains longest reigning monarch in after years on the throne Compare that to Lady Jane Grey who in sat on the throne for only nine days After that she wasyou guessed it beheaded
