Hamilton Troll meets Whitaker Owl

While listening to the sounds of the night, Hamilton Troll hears something that scares him. He soon discovers that it is a young owl named Whitaker who is being taught by his parents how to hoot. Unfortunately Whitaker needs a lot of practice. After the lesson is over, Hamilton and Whitaker go for a walk only to discover a large bear entering the area. Worried for their friends who may not be able to get to safety, Whitaker comes up with a daring plan to scare the bear away.

Hamilton Troll meets Whitaker Owl It was a dark, dark night, the moon sitting low, The clouds blocked the stars and the haze left a glow. Hamilton lay there awake in his bed, As thoughts of the day played back in his head. He finally got up and stepped out of his home, The cool night air made him wander and roam. The sounds of the night were a musical treat, Deep sounds and high sounds, with a toe tapping beat. But there was one sound out of all of them, that just wasn’t right. A sound that sent shivers throughout Hamilton tonight. It sounded up high, came from the top of the trees, And it echoed and bounced within the cool breeze. Hamilton listened then began to worry, He headed back to his home in a little hurry. When all of a sudden he heard a friends sound, It seemed quite familiar as it bounced all around. He listened again and heard a bold hoot. But the small little sound came back like “oout?” He looked and he looked, his neck bent straight back, As he looked up in the trees, all he saw was pitch black. He recognized two sounds as they repeated the same, And as his ears heard their voice he called them by name. Roy and Perl Owl, is that you up there? I wouldn’t have inquired but I got such a scare. There’s a sound I don’t know, that I just couldn’t pass, “No worries friend Hamilton, we’re just having class. We’re teaching our son how to hoot like an owl, But currently his hoots sound more like a howl.” Then something flew by, so fast like a blur, Landed next to Hamilton and said, “I’m Whitaker.” Startled, not scared, but totally amazed, Hamilton stared with his eyebrows raised. Whitaker Owl was a handsome young boy He looked like his father, a miniature Roy. Like an eagle he soared, his wings spread out wide, And when he stood at attention, his wings at his side, He looked like a statue, his face showed no fear. But when Whitaker hooted, it hurt Hamilton’s ear. Instead of a hoot it sounded like hoooo-wl Whitaker knew why he was in school. His parents flew down and stood next to the troll, They hooted perfection, to teach was their goal. But as Whitaker repeated, what his parents had hooted, Hamilton wished Whitaker could be muted. What came out of his beak was something just wrong, It was high pitched and cracked, not like an owl’s song. He puffed up his chest and stiffened his neck, He poked out his head like about to peck, The sound started low like a small little squeak, Then it grew as it came through his shiny gold beak. The young owl continued repeating each word, He was growing quite happy, this night flying bird. But the hooting was ify, his parents wanted it right, his parents encouraged him, in the misty moonlight. He saw his mom smile, his father stood tall His eyes glowing bright like a golden round ball. They tried and retried, repeating their call, And Whitaker tried, he gave it his all. But the sounds that came from him were so very weird, His mother just sighed as his father just sneered. He puckered his beak and gave a low “hoooooo” But to Hamilton it sounded like a ghost’s eerie “boo” Yet Whitaker remained proud of his out of tune cry, He just couldn’t hear why he needed to try. His parents were tired, time to call it a night, They’ll try this tomorrow, “He’ll soon get it right.” And as they flew towards the tree tops, Hamilton smiled “You’ll get it right, you’re only a child.” Hamilton and Whitaker laughed and talked, Whitaker flying as Hamilton walked. He was almost home, when Hamilton stopped, Whitaker sensed it, from the air he dropped. They looked around quickly, sniffed the air with their nose, They peeked over the grass, stood on tippy toes. In the clearing they saw him, a really big bear, Looking for dinner, small critters beware. They looked at each other, their eyes opened wide, Hamilton spoke, “We must get inside!” But Whitaker knew that hiding’s not right, He knew many friends that went out at night. They needed to know about this dangerous beast, Before the bear made them into a midnight feast! But there was no time for warnings, not everyone, It would take way too long, and some couldn’t run. But he had to do something, this he knew. But what could this tiny young owl really do? Just then an idea flooded his head, Whitaker remembered what Hamilton said. “I sound like a ghost, and I sound really scary. Do you think I could chase off this bear that is hairy?” There was no time to wonder, Hamilton nodded his head, “I’ll spread the word, you go ahead.” So Whitaker flew off, as fast as he could, He soared through the air, he flew really good. He dove past the bear and gave it his most, And the bear he was certain he’d just seen a ghost. Again and again, Whitaker flew around, He flew by the bear and gave off that sound. The bear ducked down, he covered his head, Some of his fur flew, he began to shed. He trembled afraid, “These woods are haunted!” He turned and he ran, this was not what he wanted. As the bear fled the area, he didn’t look back, He was sure if he’d stay the ghost would attack. As the bear disappeared, Whitakers parents flew in They checked on their youngling, who sat with a grin. “You saved everyone, with your unique little style, Your silent fast flight and your hoot that is wild.” Maybe just maybe, this is what you should do, Sound like yourself, your hoot is all you.” So from that night on when Hamilton would go walking, And he heard the night creatures, all the animals talking, The sounds of the woods such musical fun, He’d strain to hear Whitaker, the odd little one. And every so often, he’d hear that low “booo” And he knew it was Whitaker, saying hi to you. Dedicated to Bill & Jo Landers, whose perky ears caught the sounds of parent owls teaching their young, one night, so long ago. Thank you.
