It was a nice spring day, perfect for walking, when Hamilton got to his feet. He straightened his tie, pulled on his vest, In attempts to try to look neat. He climbed up his ladder, and took in the day It was blue and white and pink. He decided the route he wanted to take To the river to get a small drink. As he walked down the path lined with flowers and grass He stopped at the daisies to smell He was leaned over one taking a sniff When his ears heard something not well. It was a high pitched clicking, a small critter voice That sounded more like a chatter. It didn’t sound happy, gleeful or glad So he went to find out what’s the matter. He followed the sound till he saw what was talking And smiled when he recognized them. It was ma and pa squirrel teaching their young They smiled as they waved hi to him. “Whatcha doing?” He asked as he smiled at the kids, Three young squirrels sat on a tree. Their parents were teaching these young squirrels to jump An easy-like task it should be. Hamilton watched as the father described to the kids How to jump from the trees. He said “Line up your sight, at the tip of the limb Then press off hard with your knees.” They watched as their father took the big leap He jumped from their tree to the next. They clapped and applauded happy for him But the youngest squirrel was perplexed. Perplexed – puzzled, confused, causing doubt He watched his big brother line up his jump He wiggled his tail in the air. Then leapt from the tree limb with all of his might Little Chatterton simply stared. Then big sister went next, she had practiced this move She wanted to show off her skills. She wiggled her tail, lined up her sight Then jumped, giving Chatterton chills. His siblings looked back at him and at his mom As they stood on the limb looking proud. They called to their brother and told him to jump But darkness rolled in with a cloud. Chatterton shivered afraid of this task He simply did not want to fall. But his father kept saying “Come on my boy” “Chatterton jump.” he would call. The littlest squirrel sat on the limb He knew it was time for his turn. He knew he could do it if he gave it a try He really did want to learn. But as he looked down and saw the long fall He couldn’t help but be scared. He looked at the distance he needed to jump with a puzzled look he stared. His father was strong, a masculine squirrel He said, “Chatterton just make the jump.” But a fear began forming in Chatterton’s head And he sat there still like a lump. His mother was patient, calm and quite nice She explained how it worked and was easy. But the more Chatterton thought of this task, The more his stomach got queasy.

Robby's Quest: Return of the Cat, Written by DC Rush and Illustrated by Daniela Frongia. Startled, Hershey awoke from a dream. It was one he often had and it was more like a nightmare. In these dreams, Hershey discovered a young Sparrow in his backyard. Each time Hershey would sneak up on it but suddenly several other birds swooped down from the sky to rescue their friend. Hershey would lunge at the intruders but miss them completely and fall into the pool with a very loud splash! At this point in the dream, Hershey would wake and remember that this had really happened to him once. Hershey never forgave himself for missing his prey. In his younger days, he would stalk everyone, including Nomi, a much older but smaller cat who lived in the same house. Since Hershey was so big, he used to intimidate all the other cats in the area. But now, ever since he let the Sparrow escape and fell in the pool, the other cats were not afraid of him anymore. They even teased him, especially Nomi. This made Hershey feel depressed. He was not eating or sleeping very well. His owners took him to see the Vet because they thought he might be sick. Hershey knew that if he could have just one more chance at the Sparrow, he wouldn’t mess up this time and he would earn everyone’s respect once again. Recently, Hershey and Nomi had noticed increased activity around their house. Their owners were packing boxes and loading them into a large truck. Hershey was very confused. Hershey only allowed these people to live in his house as long as they fed him and took care of him. Nobody had discussed anything with him about packing and, after all, he was the main cat of the house. Hershey did not like change. But although he was curious, he decided to just kick back and play finicky. Then suddenly, Hershey felt someone picking him up. Hershey did not like being picked up at all. He was not a touchy-feely kind of cat. Sometimes people would pet him or clip his nails. Occasionally Hershey tolerated this, but usually people regretted ever touching him at all. And something about today was different. Too late Hershey saw the cat carrier out of the corner of his eye and he was not quick enough to stop the inevitable. Before he could react, he was stuffed inside and the bag was zipped shut. Hershey went ballistic. He cried out, clawed at the zipper with all his might and ran around in circles inside the bag. Finally, exhausted from expending all this energy, Hershey began to calm down. One of his owners picked up the bag and placed in the back seat of their car, backed out of the driveway and headed down the road. Hershey was very upset because he did not know if he was going back to the Vet or taking a trip. He was extremely unhappy. After several hours of sitting in the cat carrier in the back seat of the car, Hershey realized that this was not the normal journey to the Vet. Hershey could hear the people in the front seats talking. He could make out pieces of the conversation such as “new job”, “sell the house” and “moving to Nevada”. Hershey did not know where Nevada was, nor what sell the house meant, but he was sure he would not like it. Nomi was sitting on the back seat next to Hershey’s cat carrier. Hershey was not pleased that Nomi was free to roam the car while he was stuck in a cat carrier. Teasing, Nomi said to Hershey, “Maybe if you could behave yourself in the car you could be free like me.” Hershey hissed and responded, “Wait till I get out of here.” Nomi laughed. “Oh, I’m so afraid, just like those birds you couldn’t catch were.” Hershey closed his eyes and tried to relax but all he could hear was Nomi chuckling. One thing for sure, Hershey wanted out of the cat carrier in the worst way.

Alone in the Dark

With an active imagination, Naomi was afraid of the dark and dreaded the lights going out at bedtime. As the door closed she sat up with a start.
